Internet Feminism

It is quite common on the internet to see both negative representations of feminists and negative attitudes from bigots. This can be seen simply through typing "Feminism" in Googles search box where, after "Feminism definition", "Feminism is cancer" is the second highest recommended search.

Negative representations of feminism:

Almost every large social group suffers from negative representation and a vocal minority of idiots. This plays a big part in the creation of stereotypes. Feminism is no stranger to stereotypes with a stereotypical feminist being crazy and angry man-haters. This, of cource, is not true. These stereotypes are, however, regularly presented on internet articles and YouTube videos. An example of this is a video by the very large business known as Buzzfeed who are now worth billions of dollars. This video is entitled "36 Questions Women Have For Men".

https://youtu.be/u_J0Ng5cUGg

In this video, valid topics are addressed such as equal pay. However, this video became highly controversial due to its statements against men. One of the people in the video says that men "talk about boobs for hours" and that they "automatically assume that you [men] won't like a movie because it Stars a female lead". Due to this, the video gained 191 thousand dislikes and added to the stereotype of "all feminists hate men".

A video called "Hugh Mungus" has been circulating rapidly recently. The video takes place during the American police protests. A man is seen being interviewed by the woman recording. She is angry at him as he is defending the police. After he is interviewed, she asks for his name and he jokingly says "Hugh Mungus" causing the woman beind the camera to start shouting that he is sexually harassing her.

https://youtu.be/FeNJFz-WCZs

This negatively portrays feminists to be stereotypically crazy men-haters.

Negative attitudes towards feminists:

Along with negative representations of femists, there is also a lot of hate on the internet towards feminism from internet trolls. The term "femi-nazi" is regularly used by these trolls. I went on the forum site "Reddit" and found multiple anti-feminist "Sub-Reddits". On this, I discovered a lot of horrible posts saying things like "women shouldn't have the right to vote" and "feminism has a special place in hell". On the other hand, the subreddit called "feminism" was filled with civilised discussions about gender equality.

Feminism

Task 1

The 1960's seen the beginning of "Second-Wave Feminism". This movement lasted until the early 1980s. This was a reaction against women becoming domestic again when the Second World War ended after preserving society while man were battling. These second wave feminists viewed the media as sexist and due to this, they created their own pop culture. Their aim was to create a positive image for women that countered the dominating sexist attitudes seen through the media. They also wanted to raise awareness of women's oppression, sexism and patriarchy . Other impacts of second-wave feminism include abortion/contraception legalisation and furthering equal rights politically, in education, domestically and economically. This also saw the beginning of equal pay

Task 2
Laura Mulvey's essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" is based on 'The Male Gaze theory. This theory suggests that the male gaze denies the human identity of women, relegating the to the status of objects who are only admired for their physical appearance. It also suggests that the result of media being presented through the male gaze causes women to also take the male gaze and in turn, view women the same way a man would, thus objectifying other women.

Voyeurism-psychosexual disorder in which a person derives sexual pleasure and gratification from looking at the naked bodies and sexual acts of others
Scopophillia-Sexual pleasure from seeing others naked of engaged in sexual activity
Narcissism-Extreme selfishness, craving admiration

Representation of women

Positive representation

Jessica Jones (From Marvel's Jessica Jones)

Jessica Jones completely subverts gender norms and lacks stereotypical feminine traits. She is a self employed private investigator who also has superpowers. The show has a very dark tone (much like Daredevil, another marvel Netflix series). Due to this darkness, along with the gritty setting of 'Hell's Kitchen", Jessica Jones is not glamorous at all. She is depicted as being a lot more human and realistic than many of the characters in the marvel cinematic universe. The reason why I believe that Jessica Jones is a positive representation of women is because; she is not sexualised, she's a protagonist rather than a damsel in distress and her character is emotionally strong enough to persuit her previous, evil oppressor. She was a victim of sexual abuse from a man who has the ability to control minds and the show follows her as she finds other victims from the same offender to gather more information on him. The show is the second part of the marvel cinematic universe to have a female primary character (after 'Agent Carter') and is as critically acclaimed as Daredevil, proving that the gender of a protagonist plays no part in a good Tv show.

Negative Representation

Marge Simpson (The Simpsons)

Although it can be argued that in multiple episodes of this 596 episode cartoon that marge shows aspects of her character which positively represents women, that doesn't hide the fact that her character is largely a negative representation. She is a stay at home house-wife who is regularly seen looking after her baby, cleaning the house and cooking. She lives with her lazy, stupid and immature husband who always causes mayhem, yet no matter what he does, she still forgives him which shows her total submissiveness and lack of self-consideration. It is inferred that Marge is very intelligent but did not follow her dreams due to marrying Homer and living in a patriarchal, family dynamic. Her character is also very emotional and has been seen crying more than most other characters in the show. Even in the intro of The Simpsons, Marge can be seen shopping (which is another female stereotype).

Evaluation 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
Preliminary Cover Page
Full Product Cover Page

Preliminary Cover Page

Full Product Cover Page
Masthead

The masthead of my preliminary task followed some conventions of magazines as it went across the top of my magazine, almost from side to side. However, the font the I used was dull and the blue colour of the text did not successfully compliment the orange background.

On the other hand, the masthead for my music magazine followed my house style as the white text contrasted against the black background. Unlike the preliminary task, I believe that this contrast works effectively. It also suits common conventions as it covers a large amount of the top of my cover. The musical note is also an instant message to an audience that my magazine is a music magazine.
Main Cover Image
The main image on the cover of my preliminary task uses the rule of thirds successfully and the position of the image on the page allows for text to be placed onto the right side of the page. However, the image was not edited very well due to the fact that aspects of the image's original background can be seen on the outline. The mise en scene does not covey the fact that the magazine is a school magazine either. This is because, while books are used as props, my model is not wearing a formal costume or a school uniform.

The main image that I used on my full product is more effective. It also uses the rule of thirds but the mise en scene conveys the genre of magazine better. The costume of my model suggests that he is a musician. I also don't use any props in this image as I didn't believe it would be necessary as the music connotations are already successfully conveyed.

Contents Page
The format of the contents page on my preliminary task echoes that of my full product. The page numbers are in a box on the left side while the image/images are on the right. Both also have a date and issue number at the top of the page (which is a convention of magazines). The text on my full product is a lot more formal than that used on my preliminary task. The preliminary task does not have a page number while my full product does, along with references to social media sites.

In conclusion, I feel that throughout the creation process, my skills on photoshop have developed and my understanding of magazine conventions has improved quite a lot.

Evaluation 6

http://www.slideshare.net/KyleDosSantos/q-6-61986685

Evaluation 5

How did you attract/address your audience?
Buzz words
On my front cover, I used engaging language (buzz words) to attract readers. These buzz words include 'Exclusive', 'Greatest' and 'Free'. This is an effective way of drawing in audiences. By using the phrase 'Exclusive interview' in my main headline, there are implications that this is the only magazine that includes this interview. In my sell-line, I use the phrase 'The Greatest pop magazine of all time'. This line would draw in audiences as it guarantees quality. I also use the word 'Free' in the phrase '3 Free posters!'. As this word is bold, a readers attention is drawn to it. Also, the exclamation mark at the end makes the phrase seem more exciting.

Masthead
My masthead is in the largest font that I have used throughout my entire magazine. It is white that contrasts against the black background and therefore stands out quite a lot. It contains a quaver in the place of the letter 'n' which connotes my magazine to music. This would then instantly inform audiences that my magazine is a music magazine. It is also short, consisting of only 4 letters, which would further attract my audience.

Image
The image that I use on my cover is potentially the first thing that would be seen on my magazine. It is a medium close up shot of the model who I also use on my contents page and double page spread. This shows that he is the main focus of the magazine and, if he were a real artist, fans of his music would be attracted to my magazine.

House Style
The house style throughout my music magazine is white and black. In my opinion, it makes my magazine look formal. This would draw in audiences as the formal style suggests that my magazine is of good quality.

Evaluation 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Wednesday, 4 May 2016

Evaluation 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I believe the media institution 'Bauer Media' would distribute my music magazine. This is due to the fact that they already own music magazines such as "KERRANG!" and "Q". However, while "KERRANG!" solely focuses on rock music and "Q" covers a wide variety of genres, my magazine surrounds the pop genre. Due to this, 'Bauer Media; would want to distribute my music magazine so that they cover a greater section of the market as they would be catering to fans of the pop genre along with the fans they already have. Also, because "KERRANG!" and "Q" are different genres to my magazine, my magazine would not cause 'Bauer Media' to be in competition with itself.

'KERRANG!" is also targeted towards a similar age group to mine as it's target audience is aged from their mid-teens to their early 20's. Due to this, Bauer Media would already have knowledge of how to effectively distribute to my target audience. For example, 'KERRANG!' now has a multi-platform approach as it's magazines are accessible online and they have a radio station.

'Bauer Media' is a large conglomerate institution who distribute over 300 different magazines to 15 countries. Their magazine distribution stretches back to 1953 which means that they have been active for over 60 years. By having my magazine being distributed by such a large institution, I believe that people who recognise the 'Bauer Media' brand would trust my magazine to be of good quality and therefore, my magazine would be able to access a very large audience.

Evaluation 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Masthead

This is the masthead for my music magazine. It contains the title of my music magazine in a white font colour. The white font contrasts against the black background which fits the house style of my magazine. My masthead takes up a large amount of the top of my magazine cover. This is a common convention of magazines (such as "KERRANG!"). The letter 'n' in the word "Tune" is a quaver due to the fact that it directly relates my magazine to music.

Sell-line
The sell-line for my music magazine is at the top of the page. A sell-line is another common convention of music magazines to make their band image seem more trustworthy in quality. My magazine uses the phrase "The Greatest pop magazine of all time". The word 'Greatest' is used as a buzz word. This is similar to the sell line of the music magazine 'Q' as its phrase is "The Uk's Biggest Music Magazine", using 'Biggest' as a buzz word.

Headline
Another convention of music magazines that I have used is my headline. I have written in the larger font "Jordan Lloyd" which draws the attention of the audience to this, indicating that it is the main focus of the magazine. It relates to the main image on my cover page. Magazines like "KERRANG!" also use their headine to show the magazine's main feature. I have focused on the same person on my double page spread as I have on my cover. I use the phrase "exclusive interview as 'exclusive' is a very common buzz word throughout many magazines.
Page Numbers
On both my contents page and double page spread, I use page numbers at the bottom corner of each page. Page numbers are conventions used in all magazines. I presented my page numbers in white font beside the logo of my music magazine within a black rectangle. This suits my black and white house style and the black box contrasts against the white background of the pages.

Mise-en-scene of the images
I took my photographs against a brick wall background on a sunny day. I decided to use natural lighting in my shots as it would make the images look more professional. I removed the background from the images used on both the cover page and double page spread. This ensures that all of the attention is drawn to the model. However, I have decided to leave the background in the image that I use on my contents. This echoes magazines such as "Kerrang!" who remove the background from the image on their cover pages but not on their contents page.

Costume, Props & People
I decided to make my actor wear a white shirt, glasses and black braces to give the impression that his clothing is smart while I also made him wear black trainers too which implies that his clothing is also casual. The costume coveys that the genre of my music magazine is pop as I was inspired by the dress sense of real-life artists such as Bruno Mars and Olly Murs. The white shirt of my actor also contrasts agains the black background of my cover page. I did not implement any props into my shots due to the fact that the expressions of my model already convey that this is a music magazine. The friend I chose to be my model was chosen because he is good at drama and therefore able to effectively convey expressions that give a sense of him being an artist.

Font and Style
The text on my magazine is all either white or black throughout, keeping constancy. The size of the text ensures that it is not only readable from up close both also at quite a far distance. This means that the text would be readable from a store shelf and therefore, would attract potential readers. I use the fonts 'Rockwell Extra Bold', 'Didot' and 'Myrid Pro' throughout my magazine due to the fact that I believe they all compliment each other. The music magazine "NME' also uses different fonts which compliment each other.
Content
I decided to write my double page spread in the style of an interview. On my double page spread, I used a "pull quote" which reads "I never thought I'd get this far". This quote is ambiguous and makes the reader eager to read more while also being relevant to the article as a whole. Other magazines such as 'KERRANG! use pull quotes in their interviews for similar reasons.

Contents Page Creation

Firstly, I placed black boxes using the 'rectangle tool'. These are a template for the layout of my magazine. I also added the picture that I have selected for my cover page. At the bottom of the page, I made a page number by copying my magazine's logo from the cover page and pasting it into a black box. I also wrote '02" next to it using the text tool.

I then pasted my logo onto the top of my page as this is a convention of music magazines. After that, I added text in the top right corner of the date, issue number and website address. This information is another convention of contents pages.

Next, I added text in the boxes on the right side of the page. This text is spilt into 2 sections which is a convention of music magazines: 'This week'-content specific for that week and 'In every issue'- content that is a regular feature.

After this, I placed a black circle on my image with a number 14 inside. This tells the reader what page the picture is related to. I also added an extra box below this picture. This included an advertisement for subscriptions and a image of my cover page.

In the blank space below the boxes on the left, I added a message from the editor which is another convention of contents pages. This gives a further insight as to what is inside the magazine. I also used the italics font to give a more literary feel to the text.

Finally, I added social media web addresses to the bottom of my page with a picture of the logo for each site.

Warp Films and Submarine

Warp Films
Warp Films is an independent film and television company based in Sheffield. It is a subsidiary company of Warp Records and part of a conglomerate with connections with Warp X, Night Slugs, LuckyMe, Lex Records, Bleep.com and Arcola. It is a multinational company because it is affiliated with Warp Films Australia which operates in Melbourne.

It has competition in the marketplace with other British independent film companies such as Film4. Its main target audience is adults as it creates 18 rated comedies ("This is England").

The company relies on bigger American companies to help their films get distributed to a larger audience.

The film submarine had many examples of synergy and cross media convergence such as posters, online trailers and newsletters.

Front Cover Page Creation

Initially, I placed my chosen image for my front cover and changed the background colour to black.
Then, I place text in front of my image in large text which reads "Jordan Lloyd//Exclusive interview". This phrase is short and contains a buzz word ("Exclusive") which would attract an audience. I set the font as 'Rockwell Extra Bold' and made the font size 214.68 as this size is big enough to be read from a distance and fits perfectly between both sides of the page. I also put several effects on this text such as 'Drop Shadow', 'Inner Glow', 'Outer Glow', 'Outer Shadow' and 'Stroke'. This helped my text become more eye-catching to readers.

Next, I added extra text next to my image to show what is inside the magazine. I wrote names of actual famous artists (Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé and Justin Bieber) in a font that is quite large (70) to attract the attention of their respective fans. I also added a small amount of extra information underneath each name about why each artist is in the magazine. The font size of this is 40 due to the fact that it is not as important as the names. Also, underneath this text, I wrote "3 Free Posters!". This is, again, in size 40 font. I made the word "Free" bold due to the fact that it is a buzz word and added an exclamation mark at the end of this phrase to crate a sense of excitement. The font for all of this text is called "Didot"and this will be my house style throughout the creation of my music magazine. I then placed images of actual celebrities underneath this text to indicate that these are the 3 posters. I put a white 'Stroke' effect around these images to allow them to stand out against the black background.
Now, I have placed a barcode onto my front cover as this is a common convention for a music magazine. I also made a masthead with my magazine's name ( Tu♫e). I made this white to make it contrast against the black background. I made the letter 'N' a quaver as it is associated to music.
I have now added text to the header of my cover page which reads "The Greatest pop magazine of all time". The word 'Greatest' is a buzz word and would therefore attract attention. The text font is Myriad Pro to differentiate it from the rest of the text on the page. It is size 42 due to the fact that magazines such as "Q" do not have dominating headers either. I also added a black footer to my cover using the rectangle tool. I added text in this footer that gives insight as to what is inside the magazine and it also uses celebrity names as buzz words. I then added text above my barcode that says the price of my music magazine (£3.00). This is a similar price to "Q" magazine that is £3.99.

Warner Bros and Gravity

Warner Bros
Warner Brothers is a subsidiary company that is part of a conglomerate with the parent company being Time Warner Inc which is a large multi-national company. A conglomerate is a combination of several corporations that focus on different forms of media but all fall under a single corporate entity.

They are horizontally integrated as they can produce a variation of other media products and media products from a film. They currently own Rocksteady games which allowed them to release the Batman Arkham games at a similar time to when the Batman Dark Night movies were being released. Horizontal integration is the process of a company increasing production of services at the same time. They are also vertically integrated as they produce, distribute, market and exhibit movies meaning that they own several companies at different stages of the production chain.

The company has competition in the market with Fox Filmed Entertainment, Paramount Pictures Corporation and Walt Disney Studios. Its target audience spans from children ("The LEGO Movie") to young adults ("Harry Potter") and adults ("The Hangover").

Globalisation had helped Warner Bros. to expand to audiences in Indian and Chinese markets.

Industry convergence with Warner Bros:

  • Video Games
  • Television
  • Music
Recently, Warner Bros have implemented 3D into many of their movies. "The LEGO Movie" is considered one of the most successful 3D movies ever made.

Gravity
It is inspired by a real life event in 2008 where China sent shrapnel hurling at 16,000 mph through space. The film was considered a 'visual masterpiece' which attracts fans of the blockbuster genre. It also attracted fans of the sci-fi genre and the action genre. It was intended to appeal to different age groups.

The executive producers for the film Stephen Jones, Nikki Penny,Christopher DeFaria. This means that they were the main people who 'bankrolled' the movie. The production budget was estimated to have a budget of £100,000,000. The marketing was likely between £40-£50m.

The movie starred Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Avengers Marketing

I believe that marketing played a major role in the success of 'The Avengers'. This is due to the fact that the movie is the 5th highest grossing film of all time. Therefore, the audience were not all Marvel fans. A lot of the audience had already seen films related to 'The Avengers' as part of Disney's '5 year marketing plan'. The were 'Ironman', 'Captain America', "Thor' and 'Ironman 2' so the characters were already established so fans were excited to see them all collaborate. The film also featured very popular actors such as Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johanson which attracted fans of the actors. The film had cross-media marketing with Facebook. Their posts were regular but they did not spam and due to this, the audience was frequently reminded of the film but were not annoyed by the adverts. The distributer (Disney) used synergy to tie-in with brands such as Lego, Visa and Dr Pepper. This further promoted the film to allow for a greater audience.

Conventions- Anchorage text

I will have anchorage text on my music magazine. This text will be on the lower right hand size of my music magazine, next to my central image. This will have celebrity names in big, bold, capital letters with why they are included in my magazine written in small letters below them. This is to attract attention to the celebrity names.

Tuesday, 9 February 2016

Conventions- Slogan

Another convention of magazines is a slogan. My magazine will have a slogan and this will be "The greatest pop magazine of all time!". I will have this slogan above my masthead. The slogan will make my magazine sound better than competitors. The slogan will be in a black text box with white text.

Conventions- Puffs

The puffs on the cover of my music magazine will include posters. This will appeal to the target audience of my music magazine due to the fact that these puffs are music related. I will have "Posters!" written in a text box above these as a buzz word to catch people's attention. A music magazine that I have researched ('Kerrang!') commonly has posters on the cover of its magazine.

Friday, 5 February 2016

Conventions-Price of my Music Magazine

The price of my music magazine will be £3:00 which is a similar price to some magazines that I have researched such as "NME" and "Rolling Stones". This is due to the fact that my music magazine will be geared towards the same target audience as both of these magazines (teenagers). I will display the price on my cover above the barcode as this is a convention of a music magazine.

Thursday, 4 February 2016

Conventions-Masthead of my music magazine

The title of my music magazine will be the word "Tune". This is due to the fact that this is a short and snappy word that is associated with the pop genre. The "n" in the word will also be a musical note (quaver) to further connect my title with music. The font size of my masthead will be big to therefore be eye-catching to a potential audience. The colour will be black to contrast against the white background of my magazine. The title will look similar to this:

Tu♫e

The shots I will be using in my magazine

Cover Page

Contents Page

Double Page Spread

Best selection for the Double Page Spread for my Music Magazine

Here are the three shots that I believe are most suitable for the double page spread for my music magazine:
I think that this shot is too far of a distance to be used for the contents page as there is too much space above and below my actor.
I again think that this shot is at too far of a distance, however, I do like the way my actor is stood in this shot.
I will use this shot for my double page spread as my actor is at a good distance from the camera. I also believe that this shot is suitable for the double page spread because I have the ability to place text for this page to the left of my actor.

Best selection for the Contents Page of my Music Magazine

Here are the three shots which I think are most suitable for the contents page of my magazine (These shots were taken as landscape and therefore, I will have to rotate my selected image before using the shot for my magazine. Also, I will add more bricks to the background for it to fit the contents):
Although I like this shot, this image has too much free space to the left of my actor. Therefore, I will not be using this in my music magazine.

Again, I like this picture. However, I prefer the gesture my actor has in the next picture and due to that, this picture will not be used in my magazine.

This is the picture that I will be using for my contents page. This is due to the fact that I like the gesture my actor has and I also believe that the posture in this picture if good.

Tuesday, 26 January 2016

Best selection for Front cover of my Music Magazine

Here are all of the shots which I believe to be most suitable for the front cover of my music magazine. I will now analyse them to decide which one will be used for my front cover:

I believe this shot is at too far of a distance to be used as my front cover, meaning that it would not stand out very well. Therefore, I will not be using this shot for my music magazine.

I also believe that I have taken this shot at too far of a distance which is why I am not using it as my magazine cover.

Again, this shot is at a far distance and I have decided to not use this for my magazine cover.

This shot is at a more suitable distance, however, I do not like the posture of my actor in this photograph.
I really like the angle and lighting on this image but I would not use this as my cover due to the fact that I will not be able to place text easily around it and because of this, I will not be using the image for my cover page.
This is the image which I will be using for the cover of my music magazine. I really like the angle of this shot and also the position my actor is stood in. I believe that the shot conveys that the genre of my magazine is pop music through the mise en scene of this picture.
