Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

The masthead of my preliminary task followed some conventions of magazines as it went across the top of my magazine, almost from side to side. However, the font the I used was dull and the blue colour of the text did not successfully compliment the orange background.
On the other hand, the masthead for my music magazine followed my house style as the white text contrasted against the black background. Unlike the preliminary task, I believe that this contrast works effectively. It also suits common conventions as it covers a large amount of the top of my cover. The musical note is also an instant message to an audience that my magazine is a music magazine.
Main Cover Image
The main image on the cover of my preliminary task uses the rule of thirds successfully and the position of the image on the page allows for text to be placed onto the right side of the page. However, the image was not edited very well due to the fact that aspects of the image's original background can be seen on the outline. The mise en scene does not covey the fact that the magazine is a school magazine either. This is because, while books are used as props, my model is not wearing a formal costume or a school uniform.
The main image that I used on my full product is more effective. It also uses the rule of thirds but the mise en scene conveys the genre of magazine better. The costume of my model suggests that he is a musician. I also don't use any props in this image as I didn't believe it would be necessary as the music connotations are already successfully conveyed.
Contents Page
The format of the contents page on my preliminary task echoes that of my full product. The page numbers are in a box on the left side while the image/images are on the right. Both also have a date and issue number at the top of the page (which is a convention of magazines). The text on my full product is a lot more formal than that used on my preliminary task. The preliminary task does not have a page number while my full product does, along with references to social media sites.
In conclusion, I feel that throughout the creation process, my skills on photoshop have developed and my understanding of magazine conventions has improved quite a lot.
